Work With Company Chameleon
I was privileged to work with Company Chameleon on a poster for their new piece “Pictures We Make”. To learn more about it please have a look at a promo video – “Pictures We Make”. The world premiere took place on the 14th of February 2012 at The Lowry in Manchester.
Company Chameleon is a Dance Theatre company from Manchester that I’ve also been involved with on previous projects. They provide a constant inspiration for my interest in contemporary dance. These are links for various social media pages if you’d like to learn more about them and see some of their amazing work:
I wanted to share some of the development work that goes into projects like this. Hence, I’ve uploaded a series of sketches that we were considering for the main image that we were going to use on the poster. The piece is about relationships so we wanted that to come across. From a photo shoot we chose an image of a couple of dancers in which the woman is holding up the man who is clasping tightly onto her. I personally see it as a reverse role metaphor. Usually it is the man that is the strong rock and provides the support for the feeble, often cranky woman. Here, the man is man enough to show that he too is vulnerable and it is the woman that needs to be strong and offer support in the relationship. That idea was developed by juxtaposing it with the second couple of dancers in the same pose but without the clothes. To me that contrast of too many clothes against none refers to the layers that we shed in a relationship in order to get close to one another and really trust them to hold you up. I really like that as an image – I thought it was beautiful and very powerful but unfortunately it didn’t pass because of nudity issues. There is no nudity in the performance so we didn’t want to suggest it and consequently misinform the audience.
These of course are only my own thoughts on this. You’re all more than welcome to interpret the images in your own way – please share what you think!
